Mame

The Minerva Club was proud to present Jerry Herman's hit Musical "MAME" for only the second time in the club's history, the first time being 25 years earlier.
"MAME" opened on Broadway on May 24 1966, at the Winter Garden Theatre and ran for 1508 performances. It starred Angela Lansbury, Bea Arthur, Jane Connell and Charles Braswell and contains memorable songs including "It's Today" "Open A New Window" "The Man In The Moon" "We Need A Little Christmas" "Bosom Buddies" and of course that rip-roaring showstopper, its title song "MAME"
When Auntie Mame - a well to do in Twenties New York - receives a "wonderful present" of her 10 year old nephew Patrick, she resolves to bring him up with the fullest possible experience of the world! This involves her "bosom buddy, Vera Charles - a multi-Martini Grande-dame of the legitimate theatre who hates children. The boy's nanny, Agnes Gooch, does not approve.
During The Depression, Mame loses everything - including jobs - as quickly as she finds them. As a manicurist she meets Beau - a wealthy Southerner. Beau introduces her to his family, who disapprove of her, however Beau proposes marriage.
Patrick grows up. Beau dies suddenly and Mame is persuaded to write her memoirs, aided by Gooch who, inspired by Mame, has experimented in a liberated life with "outstanding results".
When Patrick becomes engaged to a blonde "with the IQ of a dead flashlight battery" Mame decides to rescue him from a future of boring snobbery - just as he rescued her from the trap of the Twenties.
Needless to say, she succeeds, and the story ends with "great-auntie Mame" rescuing Patrick's SON from boring conformity.
